MANCHESTER - It certainly wasn't the start the Bedford 13-year-old all-stars envisioned.

Plymouth, Mass., scored in each of the first three innings Saturday and handed Bedford a 9-5 setback in the first round of the Babe Ruth 13-year-old New England Regional.

Plymouth scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second and three in the third. Bedford pitching surrendered nine hits and walked eight. Bedford also committed two errors that led to a pair of unearned runs.

"You put guys on base and you make errors, that's a recipe for disaster - and that's what happened today," Bedford coach Kevin Lavigne said. "I figured it would come down to the team that executed better defensively and I think that was the difference. They got some hits but we compounded that by making some two-out errors. Poor start."

Bedford, the New Hampshire state champion, must win its next game to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament. Bedford is scheduled to face Central Maine Sunday at 10 a.m. in the first of four games at Gill Stadium. Westfield, Mass., beat Central Maine 13-3 Saturday.

Kyle Booth, Johnathan Quenley and Peter Jameson each had two hits for Plymouth, which played errorless baseball and turned two double plays.

"That's big at this level," Plymouth coach Tony Coppola said. "We've been doing it with defense all summer.

"This is all new to this group. Before this year they hadn't won a tournament of any kind."

Shortstop Grant Lavigne (coach's son) had a double, a triple and scored twice for Bedford, which had nine hits in the loss. Connor Collins also scored twice for Bedford, which trailed 9-3 after three innings.

Bedford is one of two New Hampshire teams in the tournament. Manchester finished third in the state tournament, but qualified as the host team. Manchester was scheduled to play Coventry, R.I. In Saturday's 8 p.m. game.

Kevin Lavigne said Grant Lavigne will be Bedford's starting pitcher today.

"You make mistakes and have bad games you have to put it behind you," Kevin Lavigne said. "In my estimation the mark of a good team is one that bounces back from bad loses. Good teams don't lose those kind of games consecutively.

"You have to be able to put it in the rearview mirror and move on. I'm expecting a much better game (today)."
