Rochester, Lebanon win before rain halts Legion play

CONCORD — They played baseball at the American Legion state tournament Friday, but they didn’t play to the end.

The tournament’s first two games were completed at Concord’s Memorial Field, but Games 3 and 4 were postponed until today. Rochester beat Laconia 5-3 in the tournament’s first game, and Lebanon defeated Derry 10-2 in the second contest.

Goffstown was scheduled to face Nashua in Game 3, and Concord was scheduled to meet Londonderry in Game 4. The Goffstown/Nashua game was moved to this morning at 9, and the Concord/Londonderry contest will follow.

Gary Webster, chairman of the New Hampshire American Legion baseball committee, said four games are on today’s schedule. Derry will face the Concord/Londonderry loser at 4 p.m., and Laconia will play the Goffstown/Nashua loser at 7 p.m.Rochester 5, Laconia 3

Left fielder Anthony Diprizio collected two hits and drove in two runs to highlight Rochester’s victory.

Rochester led 3-0 after three innings, but Laconia made it a one-run game by scoring twice in the top of the eighth. Rochester regained a three-run advantage by pushing across two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Rich Kramer struck out 11 in seven innings to earn the win. He allowed two runs on six hits and walked two.

Graham Nyhan surrendered all five Rochester runs and took the loss. Nyhan pitched seven innings and walked seven.

Mark Leahy and Andrew Langdon each had two hits for Rochester, which will face the Goffstown/Nashua winner in its next game.

Ryder Arsenault had three of Laconia’s eight hits.Lebanon 10, Derry 2

Joe Cravero pitched eight scoreless innings as Lebanon cruised to an easy victory in its opener.

Cravero allowed four hits, struck out 12 and walked three. Cravero and Cam Blewitt each had three hits and two RBIs. Lebanon’s Dalton’s Campbell had two hits and drove in four.

Jeff Singster had two of Derry’s seven hits. Derry also received a two-run single from third baseman Kyle Albertelli.

Derry’s Andrew Herlihy started on the mound and gave up five runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. Derry, which trailed 10-0 entering the bottom of the ninth, committed five errors in the loss.

Lebanon will play the Concord/Londonderry winner.
