Portsmouth bridge celebration pushed up to Aug. 8

PORTSMOUTH — The ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration of the new Memorial Bridge has been pushed ahead one week.

Originally scheduled for Aug. 15, the celebration will now be held Aug. 8 at 11 a.m.

The bridge is scheduled to open ahead of that, once final testing is completed. As of Wednesday afternoon, work continued and the bridge remained closed.

According to the state Department of Transportation, the celebration is planned to highlight the historical link between Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine. It will include a procession across the bridge and a ceremonial ribbon-cutting by former Portsmouth Mayor Eileen Foley, who was 5 when she cut the ribbon to open the original Memorial Bridge in 1923.
