'Charlie Morgan' bill to provide benefits to same-sex military couples clears committee

The legislation is named after New Hampshire National Guard Chief Warrant Officer Charlie Morgan, who died earlier this year after a battle with breast cancer. Morgan's wife and daughter have not been eligible for certain survivor benefits because of the definition of 'spouse' in federal code.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen's legislation to extend benefits to same-sex military couples cleared a legislative hurdle Wednesday after it passed the Senate Veteran's Affairs Committee on a bipartisan voice vote.
