Dover man, 18, faces sexual assault charges

DOVER — An 18-year-old local man was indicted this month by a Strafford County grand jury, accused by police of coercing and threatening a young girl in Somersworth in December.

Samuel Coffey, 18, of 1113 Lilac Lane, No. 13, was charged with four counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault, two counts of felonious sexual assault, second-degree assault, simple assault, unsworn falsification and prohibited sales.

The grand jury handed up the indictments July 18.

Police accused Coffey of assaulting, strangling, and slapping the girl, now 17, and also supplying her with alcohol Dec. 17 in Somersworth. At the time, Coffey was 17 and the girl was 16, according to the indictments.

He is scheduled to appear at an arraignment in Strafford County Superior Court Aug. 1 at 9 a.m.

Each count of aggravated felonious sexual assault, which is a special felony, could result in up to 10 to 20 years in prison and a $4,000 fine. Felonious sexual assault and second degree assault are Class B felonies, and each count could yield up to 3 ½ to 7 years in prison and a $4,000 fine. Simple assault, unsworn falsification and prohibited sales are all Class A misdemeanors, which could each result up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
