Multiple charges for Mass. man after Salem police say he tried to flee in cuffs
SALEM — A Dracut, Mass., man faces a long list of charges after Salem Police said he presented an officer with a fake identity before shoving him and taking off into oncoming traffic after a routine traffic stop.
Police arrested Corey Welch, 22, shortly after 5:15 Sunday evening.
Welch had been traveling along Route 38 near Delaware Drive when he was pulled over by Salem Police Officer Nick Turner.
After failing to produce proof of identity, Welch initially gave Officer Turner a pseudonym, police said. It was then they learned that Welch's license had been suspended.
After a brief struggle, during which Welch was handcuffed and led toward the police cruiser, he briefly escaped, dashing into oncoming traffic.
"The suspect suddenly bull-rushed Officer Turner, knocking him backwards and taking off running," Salem Deputy Chief Shawn Patten said, noting that the police officer chased Welch toward Route 38, where he dodged unsuspecting motorists before being tackled to the ground by Turner.
"He continued to kick and flail away until other responding officers arrived who were able to control him and get him into the cruiser," Patten said.
Further inspection of the vehicle revealed a small amount of marijuana, along with packets of synthetic marijuana commonly referred to as "spice" and "Scooby snax," police said.
Welch, who refused bail, was transported to the Rockingham County jail.
He faces two counts each of simple assault and resisting arrest, as well as charges of driving after suspension, escape, possession of controlled drugs and transportation of controlled drugs.
