Wet weather causes Legion teams to cram in games

American Legion baseball teams from the area are entering their final week of play before the state tournament, which will be played at Memorial Field in Concord starting Friday, July 26.
The wet weather caused many postponements and cancellations, and some teams will be scrambling to make games up.

Tom Lamy, manager of the Wesley Wyman Post 16 team in Goffstown said his team did not play at all this past week due to rainouts, but they did beat Laconia Post No. 1 8-0 Tuesday, July 16.

On Friday, July 19, they travel to Laconia, then Sunday itís another double-header against Manchester Sweeney Post 2 at Gill Stadium.

Assistant manager for Salemís Post 63, Craig Dufton, said the injury bug has plagued his team this year, losing several starters and pitchers.

Post 63 lost all four games last week, including both ends of a double-header against Nashua Post 48, a 12-8 loss to Portsmouth Post 6 and heartbreaking 5-4 extra-inning loss to Londonderry Post 27.

Things have not been much easier for Dick Laflamme and his Bedford Stevens-Buswell Post 54 team. They also lost four straight.

While Laflamme is bullish on the future and playing hard to the end, his young team is taking its lumps now. Losses include a close 4-3 game to Concord, 10-2 against Laconia and two to Merrimack Post 98.

Despite the hard year for his Legion seniors, Laflamme said the Bedford Legion Junior squad is 5-3 and in the hunt for a playoff berth.
