Grantham golfer leads NE Amateur Golf Championship

Seven New Hampshire golfers including overall leader Evan Russell of Grantham made the cut Wednesday to play in the final round of the 84th New England Amateur Championship at the Green Mountain National Golf Course in Killington, Vt.

Russell, who plays out of the Country Club of Vermont and collegiately for the University of Hartford, carded a five-under 66 round Wednesday. Russell leads the 54-hole tournament by two strokes over Billy Walthouse of Longmeadow, Mass. and eight shots in front of Damon Salo of Bretwood. Salo fired a two-under 69, giving him a two-day 73-69-142 score, good for a ninth place tie.

Ryan Kohler (67-76-143) of Hooper Golf Club in Walpole, who was tied for second after the first round, slid to a 12th place tie with Joseph Toland (75-68-143) of Hanover CC.

Chris Houston of Laconia CC (69-75-144), Joe Leavitt (77-74-151) of Atkinson and Ryan Tombs (77-75-152) of Manchester CC each made the cut.

AJGA Juniors

Three-time New Hampshire Women's Golf Association junior champion Lauren Thibodeau of Hampstead is 11th in a field of 24 golfers after two rounds in the AJGA Junior Tournament at Tedesco in Marblehead, Mass.

The 13-year-old standout fashioned a 10-over-par 80 on Wednesday, four strokes higher than her first round on Tuesday. Her 156 score is 11 strokes behind leader Chloe Corriveau of Pebble Beach, Calif.On the boys' side, newly-crowned New Hampshire Golf Association junior champion Tom Hixon (76-80-156) of Rye is tied for 56th spot in a field of 72. Hixon struggled with eight bogeys (five on the front nine) and two double bogeys. He registered two birdies.

USGA Amateur

Bedford's Will McLaughlin of Concord CC qualified for the United States Amateur Tournament to be held Aug. 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. The regional qualifier was held at Weston (Mass.) Golf Club on Monday.

McLaughlin fashioned a 73-75-148 total. He totaled 22 pars, six birdies, six bogeys and two double bogeys.
