Bar attack indictment

BRENTWOOD - A Dover man who leveled the punch that killed 24-year-old Joshua Krantz during an unprovoked assault at The Page Restaurant in Portsmouth has been indicted for manslaughter, prosecutors said Wednesday.

.Zachary O'Neill, 24, was indicted on the charge by a Rockingham County grand jury along with a single count of first-degree assault in connection with the fatal attack that police say was spurred by a spilled drink during the early morning hours of April 6...O'Neill, who has been held in jail since his arrest, faces up to 18½ to 33 years in state prison if he is convicted by a jury of the manslaughter charge. The first-degree assault charge carries an enhanced prison term of 11 to 22 years, according to indictments...Krantz was attacked from behind on a basement-level dance floor around 12:43 a.m. on April 6, police said.

An employee at The Page later told police O'Neill said he waited until nearly the end of closing time to hit Krantz because he didn't want to ruin his own night. Krantz reportedly spilled a drink on O'Neill earlier in the night, police said...Krantz went home after being hit, and was found dead in his Dover apartment hours later.

O'Neill was charged with first-degree assault and apprehended by state police in Rochester once he was identified as a suspect a few days later...Earlier this month, the state Medical Examiner's Office ruled that Krantz' death was a homicide. Krantz died from an acute epidural hematoma that occurred as a result of his skull being fractured, prosecutors said...Rockingham County Attorney James Reams announced the upgraded charges against O'Neill on Wednesday.

The Page closed its doors permanently June 21 when the city filed a petition with the state Liquor Commission to terminate the bar's liquor license.jkimble@newstote.com..
