Rockingham County jail theft probe continues

BRENTWOOD — The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate a theft case at the Rockingham County jail, but officials are saying little about the probe.

The investigation that began more than a month ago involves two employees at the jail, county officials said.

Sheriff Michael Downing said this week that his office is investigating a theft, but declined to provide more details about the case.

One jail employee is no longer working at the jail, but Commissioner Kevin Coyle of Derry would not say whether the employee resigned or was fired. Coyle also would not describe the employee’s position.

Another worker is a corrections officer who remains employed, according to Coyle.

The two were suspended without pay during the investigation.

“The matter is still pending with both internal and external investigations and I can’t comment until it’s finished,” Coyle said.

No charges have been filed.

Jail Superintendent Stephen Church did not return phone calls.
