New Saint Anselm College president takes keys, ready to continue mission

MANCHESTER — On Monday, Steven R. DiSalvo became the 10th president of Saint Anselm College, succeeding Father Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B., who retired after serving as president for 24 years.

The transition occurred during a brief ceremony in the president’s office, during which Father Jonathan handed his key to Dr. DiSalvo.

“It is a great pleasure to turn over the key to the college to you, but not just the key, the mission,” Father Jonathan said.

DiSalvo was selected in April, after a national search, to become the first lay president in the college’s 125-year history. Saint Anselm presidents previously have been monks of the Order of St. Benedict, which founded the college.

“I have great admiration for the mission of the Benedictines, their outstanding work in Catholic higher education and their commitment to excellence.” Dr. DiSalvo said. “I share the values set forth by Saint Anselm and look forward to engaging the entire community in living the mission.”

DiSalvo previously served as president of Marian University in Fond du Lac, Wis., and as president and founder of The Hopewell Group, Inc. He was also executive director of the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation. He has worked for three Jesuit universities: Fordham, Loyola Chicago and Fairfield, where he raised money and worked in the office of the president.

DiSalvo earned a doctorate in educational leadership at Fordham University where he also earned an MBA in marketing and bachelor’s degree in psychology. His inauguration as president of Saint Anselm College will be Oct. 18.

Father Jonathan plans to spend a year on sabbatical in New York and Rome.
