NH's Kohler tied for second at New England Am

Ryan Kohler is in great shape entering today’s second round of the 84th New England Amateur Championship.

The Spofford resident fashioned a four-under 67, leaving him in a five-way second place tie, one stroke behind the leader at the Green Mountain National Golf Course in Killington, Vt.

Jamison Randall of Cumberland, R.I., who is entering his junior season on the golf team with Old Dominion University, leads the field of 156 golfers with a five-under 66.

Kohler of Hooper Golf Club in Walpole, who will tee off at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the 10th tee, was steady throughout the day.

He fired a two-under 34 on the front nine, converting birdies on the par 4, third hole and par five, sixth hole. He finished strong with a two-under, 35 on the backside, sinking birdie on the par 4, 14th hole and an eagle on the par 5, 15th hole.

A bogey on the par 3, 17th hole ultimately cost him the share of the lead, but he still finished the day with 13 pars.

Kohler, who is a graduate of Keene State College where he played baseball as a pitcher for the Owls, lost to Craig Steckowych of Portsmouth CC 3 and 1 in the round of 32 during the New Hampshire Golf Association’s State Am Tournament at the Golf Club of New England in Stratham last week.

Chris Houston of Laconia CC, a resident of Gilford who plays for the Penn State golf team, carded a two-under 69, good for a three-way tie for ninth place.

Newly-crowned NHGA State-Am winner Michael Martel of the Crotched Mountain Golf Club and Resort joined fellow Granite Stater Damon Salo in a 10-place tie for 27th overall with a two-over 73 score.

Other New Hampshire golfers in the field include Joseph Toland of Hanover CC (four-over, 75) who is one stroke ahead of Cameron Salo of Bretwood and two strokes ahead of Joe Leavitt of Atkinson, Ryan Tombs of Manchester, Nate Choukas of Hanover and Zach Pollard of Hanover, all carding a six-over, 77 tally.

Nine strokes behind the leader is Zach Temple (80) of Hanover. Tim Manwaring of Bretwood (11-over, 82) and A.J. Correia of Laconia (16 over, 87) completed the New Hampshire field. Max Linemayr of Wentworth-by-the-Sea withdrew from the 54-hole tournament, which concludes Thursday.
