Nolin, Cabrera lead New Hampshire past Portland

MANCHESTER — Life is good if you’re pitching against the Portland Sea Dogs these days.

Sean Nolin tossed eight scoreless innings to help the New Hampshire Fisher Cats defeat Portland 5-0 Monday night in the first game of a three-game series.

Nolin allowed four hits, struck out nine and walked two. He raised his record to 6-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.09. The Sea Dogs haven’t scored in the last 28 innings.

Outfielder Melky Cabrera had two hits, including a two-run home run, for the Fisher Cats, who improved their record to 47-46. The Sea Dogs dropped to 46-48.

Cabrera is on a major league rehabilitation assignment and is expected to play in all three games against Portland. He said he hopes to rejoin the Blue Jays this weekend.
Second baseman Derrik Gibson collected three of Portland’s four hits. Mike McCarthy (0-3) took the loss.
First baseman Gabe Jacobo also had two hits for the Fisher Cats, who did all of their scoring in the fifth inning.

Seventy of Nolin’s 98 pitches were strikes. Chorye Spoone pitched the ninth.

Marcus Walden (5-9, 3.34) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Fisher Cats tonight. The Sea Dogs have not announced their starting pitcher.
