Medical-alert scam targets elderly, family members

MERRIMACK — Police are warning residents about a telephone scam from callers claiming to be representatives of health care alert companies.

The Merrimack Police Department says it has received several complaints recently about the calls.

Callers say that a relative has purchased a medical alert system for the resident and even paid for all the shipping, but the recipient needs to cover a $1 daily monitoring charge. The caller asks for a credit card number to set up a nonexistent account.

Police advise residents not to give out credit card numbers or personal information to unknown phone solicitors. Residents can call the Merrimack Police Department if they are uncertain whether the call is legitimate. Police also ask residents with elderly relatives to make them aware of the scam. For more information, call the Merrimack police at 424-3774.
