72 NH Boy Scouts to depart for 2013 national jamboree
MANCHESTER — For 14-year-old Nicholas Byrne of Londonderry, and most of the other 71 Boy Scouts expected to board buses at Camp Carpenter Saturday, it would be a once in a lifetime trip ahead.
Byrne and the other Scouts from troops throughout New Hampshire were headed to the 2013 National Scout Jamboree.
The New Hampshire Scouts will be among 40,000 Scouts, Venturers, volunteers and staff to christen the new Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia.
The Summit will be the permanent home for the Boy Scouts of America national jamboree, held every four years.
Byrne’s mother said New Hampshire’s Scouts will be matched with Scouts from throughout the country as they participate in a wide range of activities.
Scouts, who must have achieved at least first class status, have to apply to attend and must raise $1,800 for the trip.
The new facility is on 10,600 acres in an area known as the New River Gorge.
Byrne said her son is really looking forward to the challenges of zip line courses and white-water rafting. “He’s ecstatic,” said Byrne.
For the first time, girls will attend the jamboree. They will be among the Venturers participating this year.
Participants were encouraged to bring their cellphones. Byrne said there is an app that makes it easier to keep track of activities.
She said her son and others have been busy on Facebook as they prepared for the trip.
The jamboree is July 15-24, but the New Hampshire Scouts are traveling to West Virginia by bus, so they won’t be back until July 26.
Byrne wonders what the contents of the mandatory duffle bag will look like when she sees them again.
