Unitil alerts customers to scam

Unitil says its customers in the Seacoast region may have been contacted by phone as part of a national scam commonly referred to as the "green dot" scam, the company said Thursday.

On the call, the scammer demands the customer make a cash payment via a "green dot" prepaid card in an hour or less or face immediate disconnection. Unitil said it will, at times, reach out to customers by phone if there is a payment issue or to offer payment options, but never demands the use of a prepaid card to make payment over the phone.

Customers who receive unusually specific demands should not make a payment and are urged to contact Unitil customer service directly to verify account status.

Unitil's customer service number for the Seacoast area is 1-800-582-7276; for the capital area it is 1-800-852-3339; and for all New Hampshire natural gas customers it is 1-866-900-4115.
