Revised $1.1 million paving contract approved in Nashua

NASHUA — In an effort to improve city streets, officials this week approved a revised $1.1 million contract for road paving services throughout Nashua.

On average, about four to six miles of city roads are paved each fiscal year at a cost of about $1 million, according to Mayor Donnalee Lozeau.

On Monday, the Board of Aldermen adopted an amended contract with Sunshine Paving of Hudson for the work, some of which has already been completed.

The original contract was for nearly $798,000, however a change order of about $289,000 was approved this week, making the total contract nearly $1.1 million.

The streets were selected “to reduce further deterioration of their poor condition,” and additional street paving is also necessary because of sewer repairs being made in certain neighborhoods, according to the memo written by Robert Gabriel, purchasing manager for the city.

Lozeau requested that aldermen award the contract as soon as possible so work can begin promptly, asking officials to waive the reconsideration period and approve the contract on Monday.

Alderman Dan Moriarty, Ward 9, voted against the contract, telling his fellow board members that reconsideration periods are appropriate, and he believes they should be applied when considering significant purchases.

While Moriarty said he understands the need to rush select contracts on occasion, he said it should not become a habit and that adequate planning could prevent waiving standard procedures.

The new $1.1 million contract is a combination of funds from over two fiscal years, Lozeau said. By revising the contract now, Sunshine Paving will be able to continue its work without any delay during the summer months, she said.

Based on current needs, the new streets scheduled to be paved this fiscal year include portions of West Hollis Street, Lake Street, Conant Road, Temple Street, French Street, Mt. Pleasant Street, Ritter Street, Fox Street, Broadview Avenue, Highland Street, Gilman Street, Barker Street, Rogers Street, Haines Street, Holbrook Drive, Tinker Road, Stanley Lane and Judith Drive, for a total of about 3.6 miles.

An additional 1.4 miles of city streets will also be paved because of anticipated sewer repairs in select neighborhoods.

The new paving schedule will be posted on the city’s website to notify citizens of the upcoming work, and aldermen will be informed when their areas are about to be paved, said the mayor.
