Gov. Hassan taps acting director to permanently head up NH Homeland Security agency.

CONCORD — Gov. Maggie Hassan has tapped the acting director of the state’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management department to be the head of the agency.

Hassan announced Tuesday that she and Department of Safety Commissioner John Barthelmes jointly nominated Perry Plummer to serve a full three-year term as HSEM director. Plummer has been serving as the acting director since Jan. 3.

“Ensuring the safety of our people and communities is the most important role of state government,” Hassan said in a statement. “In responding to recent flash flooding in communities throughout New Hampshire, as well as to one of the most significant snow storms in years, Director Plummer has demonstrated a clear ability to act quickly and effectively to help our communities through any emergency and to position the state for federal relief.”

Barthelmes said, “Perry Plummer is well respected by the entire public safety community and has been widely recognized for his leadership, his years of service and his ability to effectively respond to the needs of New Hampshire’s communities.”

From May 2011 to Jan. 2013, Plummer served as director of fire standards and training and Emergency Medical Services at the Fire Academy in Concord.

Plummer began his career in public safety in 1986 as a firefighter in Dover. He was promoted through the department, eventually becoming Dover’s fire chief.

Plummer’s nomination must be confirmed by the Executive Council, which meets Wednesday in Peterborough.
