Youth to rally in Dover to prevent underage drinking

DOVER — Local teens are kicking off a campaign this week to help educate area residents about keeping alcohol out of the hands young people.

About 50 members of Dover Youth to Youth (Y2Y) plan to hold a demonstration Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cocheco Courtyard on Central Avenue in Dover. In case of heavy rain, the event will be held Thursday, according to Prevention Coordinator Dana Mitchell.

“The youth will utilize life-sized visuals, posters, flyers and chants in an effort to educate parents and the community about underage drinking and the source of kids’ alcohol when they first start drinking (taking it from the home) based on surveys of hundreds of Dover students,” according to a release.

Mitchell said the “target audience is adults and particularly parents.”

Y2Y members are trying to maximize exposure during lunch hours as it “also serves as a good kickoff event for the campaign going forward,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell said Y2Y has been successful during previous event. He added this week’s rally will re-launch the group’s ongoing multi-media effort with broadcast reminders on radio, television and other means.

About 200 area students — in grades 6 through 12 — are involved in the program, which is coordinated by the Dover Police Department’s Community Outreach Bureau. Members are broken down into 50-student groups who work on a variety of recreational programs and efforts to inform area residents about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.
