More than 400 adults and children turned out for the festival, a fundraising event to benefit the Wolfeboro Area Children's Center (WACC). It was expected to yield more than $4,000 to support the nonprofit center. The center offers affordable early care and education to children from 6 weeks through 5 years old. The school-age program for ages 6 through 12 meets mornings and afternoons during the school year and all day through school vacations and summer. WACC Director Susan Whiting said this year's festival garnered support from area businesses that offered free treats to festival-goers. Others donated a portion of proceeds from sales to the center.
"The Fairy Land Festival was such a big hit last year, we thought we'd do it again. We raised $4,000 last year and hope to do better this year," said Whiting.
"We love fairies," said Allie Fitzgerald, mother of 2-year-old Neva and 5-year-old Eila, of Rochester. The family spent part of the past week building a fairy house with items from their garden, including seedlings of sunflowers planted in halves of eggshells. "This brings out their creative side and imagination," said Fitzgerald.
Romney said Soleil has a "ton" of male cousins who they left back at the vacation house to enjoy the more delicate experience of Fairy Land.
Other highlights of the festival included an appearance by author Tracy Kane, who has written a series of children's and photo books on fairy houses, performances by dancers from Expressions Dance Academy, fairy house making workshops, a scavenger hunt and a fairy house contest and raffle.
