Road work on track for summer months

The recent rainstorms have not dampened road work in town.

The first phase of road repairs to Joppa Hill Road from North Amherst to New Boston Road is right on schedule, said Public Works Director Jim Stanford.

"It's slowed crews down but they keep going," he said. "Contractors are moving forward and were able to do the ledge probing."

Phase 1C of the Joppa Hill Road construction between Perry Road and Campbell Road will continue through the week of July 8. A barricade has been placed on Joppa Hill Road, just south of Campbell Road, and will continue to be closed to all traffic.

The cost of the Joppa Hill Road repair is $2,478,160, awarded to Weaver Brothers Construction, said Stanford.

Other roads to be repaired include Darby Lane, Fox Run Road and Golden Drive. Work to Tinker Road is under consideration. The drainage projects along Birkdale and Cambridge roads take place this year, with reclamation of the roads and paving expected to be completed in 2014.
For residents using the town's transfer station, Chubbuck Road will be closed Monday through Friday, July 8 through 12, for the construction of a box culvert at Riddle Brook. Temporary sanitation disposal facilities will be located at the Public Works Garage, located just before the transfer station. Collection of only bagged household trash and household recyclables will be accepted. Access to the athletic field on Chubbuck Road will not be interrupted as part of this project.

Magazine Street, located off Wallace Road, will be closed to traffic for the construction of the culvert at Riddle Brook. Vehicle, pedestrian and emergency access to house numbers 4 through 30 will be from Wallace Road only, and access to house numbers 33 through 58 will be via Wallace Road to Jackson Square to Magazine Street.

On Friday, July 12, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., an electrical outage is scheduled for a portion of Magazine Street as part of this project. Homes affected include numbers 29 through 58. The proposed road closure and construction is contingent on the brook's stream flows.
"We can't do Chubbuck without Magazine Street," Stanford said.

Now that school is out, the Public Works Department is getting into its new road season, he said.
This summer, the Public Works Department will also replace a fuel tank from gas to diesel at the town's highway garage, Stanford said. In addition, design work for the rehabilitation of Constitution Drive will also take place.

Due to construction in town, drivers have encountered several road closures and detours directing traffic around construction areas. The Bedford Police Department reminds drivers to leave plenty of time to allow for detours and to slow down.
