New Boston marks foundings of town and country

FUN & GAMES: The annual Fourth of July Celebration in New Boston this year pays tribute not only to the nation's birthday but the town's 250th anniversary. Thursday's events will include old-fashioned children's games, such as sack races (top) and wheelbarrow races (above) as well as some more contemporary contests, such as mud volleyball (middle).

NEW BOSTON — Marking not only its 82nd annual Fourth of July Celebration, but the town's 250th anniversary, New Boston's July 4 parade steps off at the top of High Street at 10 a.m. featuring marching bands, New Boston's oldest and youngest citizens, antique cars, trucks and fire apparatus, clowns and horses.

MARCHING INTO THE PAST: Re-enactors keep in step in a previous Fourth of July parade in New Boston, where annual festivities also include a chicken barbecue, fiddler’s contest, equestrian vaulting demonstration and fireworks.

Afterward, festivities on the Hillsborough County Youth Center grounds will begin with the singing of the national anthem and the traditional firing of the Revolutionary War-era Molly Stark Cannon by the New Boston Artillery Company.

Also planned is a chicken barbecue, mud volleyball tournament, fiddler's contest and equestrian vaulting demonstration as well as New Boston Idol Karaoke and old-fashioned games.

Families can spend the day, or arrive later to enjoy evening activities, food and fireworks.

BLAST FROM THE PAST: Cast in 1743, the “Molly Stark Cannon” was captured by Gen. John Stark’s troops on Aug. 15, 1777, at the Battle of Bennington against the British.

Entrance to the grounds is $5; free for children younger than 12. After 6 p.m., entry is $5 per car. For a schedule of events, log onto newbostonnh.gov.
