FRANKLIN – City firefighters and members of the Central New Hampshire Hazardous Materials Team were called to a local manufacturing plant Tuesday morning to deal with a potentially dangerous mixture of two chemicals.

Hazardous materials specialists were called to Vitex Extrusion, 43 Industrial Park Drive, shortly after 5 a.m. after a report of two chemical materials that had mixed in a container causing an "exothermic reaction" from the mix causing extreme heat, said Fire Chief Kevin LaChapelle.

After monitoring the situation for several minutes, hazmat workers noticed that the mixture had formed a solid compound and the temperature returned to normal. It was determined that there was no further hazard from the mixture, LaChapelle said, and the chemicals were left in the container so that company officials could dispose of them.

There were no injuries.
