WINDHAM — As dozens of people clad in red, white and blue gathered at Griffin Park Saturday afternoon, Recreation Director Cheryl Haas said "relief" was the first word that came to mind.

"Mother Nature definitely loves me today," she said, motioning to the sunny skies.

Though the weather forecasts were somewhat bleak in the days leading up to the Recreation Department's annual Windham Town Day, the festivities went off without a hitch.

"When it started to rain before 11 a.m., I got a little nervous," Haas said.

Fortunately sunshine prevailed for the remainder of the day, which began with a cookout, a children's bicycle parade, field games and a concert with the Windham Town Band at Griffin Park.

The day concluded with a performance by the Blues Brothers — The Next Generation band outside Windham High School, followed by fireworks.

Singing her heart out at the start of Saturday's Town Day was soon-to-be Windham High School freshman Emma Joanis.

Joanis had an eventful weekend, indeed. Following Saturday's performance of the national anthem in her hometown, she performed yet again to a somewhat larger crowd gathered at Boston's Fenway Park, where she sang at the start of Red Sox afternoon home game.
