Matt Paradis of Manchester Central is hoping his last shot at winning the New Hampshire Golf Association’s Junior Championships will be a memorable one.
“It would mean a lot to me,” said Paradis of Derryfield CC. He will meet Tom Hixon of Rye in an 18-hole match play championship flight challenge today at 7 a.m, at Campbell’s Scottish Highlands Golf Course in Salem. The match will start on the 10th tee.
In the semis Tuesday, Paradis eliminated James McKee of Windham CC 3 and 1, and Hixon ousted medalist winner and top seed Connor Greenleaf of Windham CC, 1-up.
The 17-year-old Paradis, who will enter the fall as a senior at Central, where he has been three-year member of the golf team, reached the junior quarterfinals last year before losing to eventual champion Chelso Barrett of Keene.
Today he’s expecting a tough match from Hixon.
“He beat Greenleaf, who is a very good player,” said Paradis. “I played with Tom in three or four challenge cup tournaments. He’s a short hitter and this course (in Salem) fits him well. I’m expecting a good match.”
Paradis, who lives in Hooksett, says he has a good track record at Campbell’s Scottish Highlands.
“I love the short course and I love playing match play and the strategy that goes into it,” said Paradis. “At times you can be aggressive and if you don’t have a good hole, you just move on to the next one.”
Paradis said his ball strike has been off a little this week, but he’s still hitting an average of 11 greens through his first four rounds of the tournament. “The greens are wicked hard, the speed has been average this week,” said Paradis.
Paradis never trailed against McKee, winning the first hole and gradually building a 5-up lead through eight holes.
“Then he won three straight holes, but I wasn’t worried,” said Paradis. “As long as I was shooting par, I knew I could keep the lead.”
Paradis, who closed out the match on the 15th hole, converted 12 pars, two birdies and finished match shooting one over.
“I’ll get to the course early with (Central teammate and caddy) Luciano (Osorio), hit some balls and be ready to go.”
Hixon, who plays out of the Wentworth-by-the-Sea CC, attended St. Thomas Aquinas of Dover before enrolling at the Lee Westwood Golf Academy in Apopka, Fla.
