Fisher Cats sweep Reading

MANCHESTER — The New Hampshire Fisher Cats wasted little time getting back to work in the resumption of Tuesday's rain-shortened game with Reading on Wednesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

The game picked up in the bottom of the third inning with no score and the Fisher Cats quickly posted five runs en route to a 7-1 win.

The Fisher Cats then won the regularly scheduled game, 7-3.

Eighth-spot hitter Tommy Manzella started the five-run outburst for New Hampshire by reaching on an error from third baseman Maikel Franco. Manzella stole second base and then scored with Amadeo Zazueta grounded to second base when Miguel Abreu threw the ball away.

Leadoff hitter Adam Loewen (5-for-5) singled to score Zazueta and another error on an attempted double-play resulted in a fielder's choice for Brian Van Kirk. A.J. Jimenez reached on another fielder's choice that scored Loewen and back-to-back RBI doubles from Brad Glenn and Kevin Nolan made it 5-0.

The Fisher Cats threatened in the bottom of the fourth with singles from Manzella and Loewen, but Fightin Phils pitcher Juan Sosa picked them both off first base. New Hampshire managed another run in the fifth when Van Kirk walked, moved to third on an error on a Jimenez ground ball to third base and then scored on Glenn's single down the third base line.

Manzella greeted Reading relief pitcher Bobby Bramhall with a single to open the bottom of the sixth and Loewen dunked a base hit into left field. A fielder's choice from Van Kirk erased Loewen and moved Manzella to third. Jimenez beat out an infield single and Manzella scored to make it 7-0.

Ryan Tepera threw the first three innings of the game on Tuesday, allowing one hit and not runs. But with the rest of the game being played Wednesday, Matt Wright took the mound. Wright was cruising along with no hits allowed and three one-two-three innings logged until the first pitch of the top of the seventh when Franco homered to center field to make it 7-1.

Wright recovered to retire the next three batters and gave way to Dustin Antolin to open the top of the eighth. Antolin worked quiet eighth and ninth innings to close out the game. Wright got the win to improve to 2-2.

Clint Robinson highlighted a two-out, four-run fifth inning rally with a three-run homer to lead New Hampshire in the day's second game.

New Hampshire starter Marcus Stroman gained the mound win. In five innings, he allowed three hits, two runs (none earned) and fanned four with two walks.

New Hampshire rallied for four runs in the fifth inning with two outs to take a 6-2 lead. Andy Burns started the spurt with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by A.J. Jimenez. After Jimenez took second on a single by Brad Glenn, Robinson launched his eighth season homer to right to give New Hampshire its four-run lead.

The teams traded runs in the sixth inning. Reading's John Suomi singled home Anthony Hewitt (double) and New Hampshire's John Talley doubled home Brian Van Kirk, who singled.

Reading scored a seventh inning run on a single from Tommy Mendonca.

Reading took a 1-0 first inning lead when Edgar Duran reached second on a field error by Van Kirk and scored on a single from Maikel Franco. New Hampshire tied the game in the home first on an RBI single from Jimenez and took the lead in the fourth inning when Glenn tripled and scored on a passed ball.

Reading tied the game 2-2 in the fifth inning when Albert Cartwright scored from third base on a wild pitch.
