Mass. driver charged with dragging Salem police officer

SALEM – A police officer who became stuck inside of a car and dragged several feet on Saturday night led to a Massachusetts driver being arrested for second-degree assault and a variety of other charges, police said.

Jordan Depina, 20, of Lawrence, Mass., was arrested around 12:49 p.m. after struggling with Salem police Officer Michael Massahos.

The officer pulled over Depina after spotting his car heading southbound on Route 28 near the state line with no headlights on, police said.

Massahos pulled over Depina and the vehicles drove into the parking lot of Pep Boys, police said.

Depina allegedly had a quantity of marijuana on him, police said.

Massahos attempted to take Depina into custody, but he fled on foot – running around the Pep Boys parking lot and jumping back into his vehicle, police said. There were two male passengers that also ran off during the foot pursuit, police said.

Massahos attempted to stop Depina from driving away, with his body partially stuck inside the vehicle, police said.

Depina allegedly dragged the officer for several feet before Massahos was able to get his hand on the gear shift and get the vehicle into park, according to police. Massahos then used a stun gun on Depina, but it only had a limited effect, police said. Massahos struggled with Depina and got him out of the vehicle and into custody just as back-up officers were arriving, police said.

Massahos sustained minor injuries. He was treated and released from the Parkland Medical Center. Depina was also treated and released from the Parkland Medical Center and refused the services of a bail commissioner.

He was transported to the Rockingham County Jail, held on charges of second-degree assault, possession of a controlled drug, reckless conduct, simple assault, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest.

Depina was arraigned on Monday in 10th Circuit Court in Salem and ordered held on $15,000 cash bail.

The vehicle Depina was operating had a quantity of controlled drugs in plain view along with several purses and a large amount of loose change, police said.

The investigation into the contents of the vehicle is ongoing.
