Musical theater camp in Bow makes kids feel like the pros

BOW — Most professional actors get several weeks to months to learn a script, develop a character and nail choreography. Kids in Bow will have three days.

The three-day musical theater camp, put on by The Alchemists' Workshop — a Henniker-based nonprofit — will take kids from audition to full production. Tom Dunn, The Alchemists' artistic director, said people often marvel at how anyone, but kids especially, can learn their lines so fast. He said it's very simple, really. The kids memorize their lines quickly, because, well, they have to.
This is the first time this summer's acting workshop will be coming to Bow and it's also the world premiere of Dunn's new musical, co-written by William Ogmundson. Dunn said the idea for the musical, “The Lending Doll,” came from a New York Times article. The show tells the story of how an elderly woman donates a doll to the local librarian who ultimately lets children check the doll out of the library.

The camp runs from July 1-3 at the Bow Youth Center and is for kids ages 6 to 18. The kids will put on their musical July 3 at 5 p.m. Camp fees are $130.

The Alchemist's Workshop runs several camps with associated shows during the summer and includes: June 24-29, Disney's “The Little Mermaid” at Bow High School; July 8-13, “Moose Skin Pants,” John Stark Regional High School; and, July 22-27, “The Lending Doll,” John Stark Regional High School.
