'Infinity' wins Hampton Beach sand-sculpting prize

Carl Jara of Ohio offered this piece, titled "Infinity," as his entry for the 13th annual Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Competition on Saturday. The sculpture took the first place prize. HAMPTON BEACH — A Lyndhurst, Ohio, man won the first-place prize at the Hampton Beach Sand Sculpting Competition on Saturday, according to a release.

Carl Jara's sculpture, "Infinity," depicted a man face with multiple continuous faces in his hand. Jara, who also won the "People's Choice" Award, will receive an invitation to the World Championships.

Second place went to Guy-Olivier Deveau from Quebec, Canada with the sculpture, "Phasing," a metamorphosis of a woman turning into a block. Third place went to Marc Lepire, also from Quebec, Canada. His sculpture, "Protector of the Future," depicted a baby with four faces in a globe, represening the four elements.

Fourth place went to "Mirror, Mirror" by Karen Fralich of Ontatio, Canada. And fifth place went to Justin Gordon of Groveland, Mass., with the sculpture "Legislated Liberty," representing a bald eagle chained to a gavel.

The "Sculptor's Choice" Award went to Greg Grady, Jr. with his sculpture, "To the Moon."

The sculptures will remain on display through July 7, and will be lit for night viewing.
