MANCHESTER - Former Manchester Mayor John Mongan, who led the city through much of the 1960s, died this morning at the age of 88, according to a close friend, Bob Baines.Mongan served as mayor from 1962 to 1963, and again from 1968 to 1969, acccording to data available at the city's website.Former Mayor Sylvio Dupuis credits Mongan for laying much of the groundwork of the industrial success of the city. He reserved land for industrial parks, particularly the land at Brown Avenue adjacent to Interstate 293.“He understood that the city had to change,” Dupuis said. “We always say people are visionaries. He really was.”Mongan and his wife, Mary, operated as a team.During his campaigns, they handed roses to workers as they left Millyard jobs. And they sent people formal invitations requesting their vote.
