Lancaster man, 24, indicted in alleged fight with police

LANCASTER — A Coos County Superior Court grand jury has indicted a Lancaster man on five charges, including that he attempted to take a police officer’s gun away from him during an April 13 altercation with police.

Nicholas J. Collins, 24, of 43 Wesson Road, Lancaster, is charged with taking a firearm from a law enforcement officer, two counts of simple assault, resisting arrest or detention and disorderly conduct, all during the same alleged series of incidents involving Lancaster police officers Brad Willey and David Lyon, according to the indictments.

The most serious charge involves Willey’s weapon and is a Class A felony. The assault charges, both Class A misdemeanors, are in connection with allegations Collins twice grabbed Willey during a struggle. Collins is charged with a third Class A misdemeanor, resisting arrest or detention, for allegedly interfering with one or both of the officers as they attempted to subdue and arrest him.

The grand jury also charged Collins with a Class B misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct for “making loud or unreasonable noises on that date in a public place,” including yelling obscenities.

The grand jury handed up the indictments last Friday.
