Santos drives in three as Curve beat Fisher Cats in 10

June 19. 2013 12:11AM

Adalberto Santos drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday in the Altoona Curve’s 5-4 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at Peoples Natural Gas Field in Altoona, Pa.

Justin Howard led off the 10th with a single off New Hampshire reliever Tyson Brummett. Gift Ngoepe followed with a bunt single, sending pinch runner Drew Maggi to second. After a fly out, Santos hit an 0-2 pitch into center to score Maggi.

Trailing by two runs, the Fisher Cats scored three runs in the ninth on a Brian Van Kirk home run to take a 4-3 lead. Kevin Nolan singled and Adam Loewen walked ahead of Van Kirk. The Fisher Cats threatened for more, but Ryan Schimpf and A.J. Jimenez struck out with two runners on.

The failure to add to the lead proved costly in the bottom of the ninth as Altoona’s Alex Dickerson doubled and later scored on Andy Vasquez’s single to tie the game, 4-4. Dustin Antolin, who allowed Vasquez’s hit, was charged with a blown save.

The Fisher Cats came to bat in the 10th, but then the rains came, causing a delay of 1 hour, 28 minutes.

Altoona scored first, in the fifth inning, when Charles Cutler tripled and Carlos Paulino drove him in with a single to left.

New Hampshire tied the game in the visiting eighth. Pillar singled and advanced to third on Schimpf’s single. Jimenez drove in Pillar with a sacrifice fly to center.

But the Curve scored two in the eighth on Santos’ two-run homer to take a 3-1 lead.

Brummett (0-4) took the loss. Marcus Walden started for New Hampshire, allowing three runs on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four.

Kenn Kasparek (3-1) got the win in relief for Altoona.

The teams square off tonight at 7. Deck McGuire (3-6, 5.45) pitches for New Hampshire. Altoona has not announced a starter.
