UPDATE: Salem student receives minor injuries in bus crash

SALEM- A Fisk Elementary School student was transported to the hospital with minor injuries after a truck rear-ended the school bus she was riding early Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency officials responded to the scene of the crash, near South Policy Street and Woodland Terrace, just before 12:45 p.m., according to police reports.

Salem Fire Captain Stephane Cattin said the bus had 23 children on board at the time of the crash.

Cattin said the bus driver wasn’t injured in the collision, and 22 of the students were evaluated at the scene and found unharmed. One little girl was taken to Parkland Medical Center as a precaution, though her injuries didn’t appear to be serious.

Another First Student bus arrived on scene moments later to transport the children home for the afternoon, according to school officials. School officials said the buses were running early on Wednesday due to a planned early dismissal.

According to Salem Police Lt. Robert Morin, the bus had stopped to let some children off near the Mall at Rockingham Park when a flatbed truck struck it from behind.

“The driver of the truck failed to stop in time,” Morin said, noting that the truck sustained “significant damage” in the incident, though damage to the bus was minimal.

State police were on the scene to investigate the accident  Wednesday afternoon, Morin noted, and police have cited the truck driver for following the bus too closely and failing to stop.

The name of the truck driver wasn’t immediately available Wednesday afternoon.
