Man burned in North Hampton camper fire

NORTH HAMPTON — A man was seriously burned this morning when a camper went up in flames at the Shel-Al campground.

Fire Chief Dennis Cote said the victim was inside the camper and was rescued by a woman cleaning windows at the campground at 115 Lafayette Road.

"She heard something odd, turned around and the camper was burning and she pulled him out as soon as she noticed him standing there. It was pretty heroic," Cote said.

The victim, whose name hasn't been released, was walking around outside the camper when firefighters arrived, Cote said.

The camper was heavily damaged in the blaze, which broke out around 9 a.m.

The victim was transported to Exeter Hospital, and he was expected to be flown by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital.

The cause of the fire is not known. The state Fire Marshal's Office has been called in to investigate, Cote said.

Cote said he did not know the extent of the victim's burns, but he called them "substantial."

"It's too early to tell. When you burn, you continue to until you get the body cooled down," Cote said.
