Salem man shot by Lawrence, Mass., police, then arrested


SALEM — A New Hampshire man shot by police early Saturday in Lawrence, Mass., returned to his residence in Salem and was later arrested, authorities said.<br /><br />Alexander Castro, 20, drove toward Lawrence police officers and collided with a cruiser, according to authorities. An officer fired one round at Castro, striking him in the buttocks, according to the Essex District Attorney's Office.<br /><br />Castro initially eluded capture after the altercation shortly after 5 a.m., authorities said. The initial call was for a reported loud party.<br /><br />Salem police were notified that the license plate of the Honda Civic allegedly involved in the Lawrence altercation belonged to a Salem resident, according to Carrie Kimball Monahan, spokesman for the District Attorney's Office.<br /><br />Salem police went to 6 Lancelot Court, where they questioned Castro and learned he had been shot, she said.<br /><br />Castro was taken to Lawrence General Hospital, then transferred to a Boston hospital, where he remains under guard with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. He is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and may face other charges, according to the District Attorney's Office.<br /><br />The officer, John Tully, is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting. The Massachusetts State Police are investigating.<br /><br />Salem police referred questions to authorities in Massachusetts.
