During the Civil War, 17 members of the Portsmouth Shipyward-built USS Kearsage won the Medal of Honor in the action to sink the Confederate raider Alabama. In honor of that victory, KEARSARGE is only one of two United States ship names mandated by Congress to be used more than once. There have been five, though only four were commissioned.
