Jesse Remington graduates remember travel, service, and the feeling of family at school

CANDIA — With only 10 graduates, Jesse Remington High School's Class of 2013 is tiny, but a big crowd of family, friends and alumni turned out for the school's commencement ceremony at Candia's Congregational Church Friday night.

"We are going to celebrate and go through an important rite of passage called a high school graduation," Headmaster Jeffery Philbrick told the crowd.

The small Christian school, which began in the basement of the church back in 1992, offers kids a chance to travel and become involved in a wide range of community service while, at the same time, receiving an individualized and highly challenging academic education.

"My freshman year at college was a breeze," said Derry resident Emily Shadttuck, a member of the Class of 2004.

Graduating seniors Anna Bacon, Rachel Burke, Victoria Choi, Zachary Clark, Daniel Elliott, Emily Goldthwaite, Julia Hawkins, Angelina MacDonald, Anna Philbrick and Madeline Pryor will now head off to colleges and work as nearby as Saint Anselm College and as far off as Bodrog Christian School in Hungary.

Although they have been through high school as a small tight-knit group, Dianna Bowden, who heads up the administrative office, said they are more than ready to head out into the world.

"As a school, we travel all over," said Bowden. "We've been to New York and Philadelphia and the kids do a lot of volunteer work."

Bowden said the school is a huge family, and students will always support one another.

And as Rev. Bryan Moore, pastor of Candia's Congregational Church, told the crowd, the students are ready to take their next big step.

"They are glad they are done," he said. "They anticipate what is in front of them, and we delight in that."
