Squam River Landing will hold ribbon cutting

ASHLAND — Developers of the new Squam River Landing residential community located in the heart of the Lakes Region will host a ribbon cutting on June 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. to celebrate the construction phase of the 61-home development.


Phase I of construction is comprised of 24 home sites ranging in price from $110,000 for wooded sites, and $265,000 for lake view sites. The homestyles featured in the Squam River Landing marketing materials pay homage to the Squam Lakes region cottages and camps of yesteryear, ranging in size from 1,400- to 2,000- square feet.


The home design and construction methods will be Energy Star compliant and LEED and NAHB Green eligible. The development offers lake access through the Riveredge Marina and Squam River landing Boat ClubThe development team is comprised of owners Barry Gaw, Alan Altman and Theodore Altman. Gaw is founding member of Sippican Partners LLC, the development manager for the project. A resident of a Holderness whose family spent summers in the region in the 1960s and 1970s, Gaw is also a director on the board of The Squam Lakes Association. In a recent interview, Gaw discussed the project and the uniqueness of the Squam Lakes community.


"New Hampshire is unique within New England, and the Squam watershed is unique within the Lakes Region, with its connection to history and to strength of the communities," he said.

The project's master plan seeks to balance economic development with sustainable growth and housing. The project will create 5,000 short-term construction jobs and 16 permanent jobs, and will allow Riveredge Marina to expand its workforce to include residential property management.The property, a total of 65 acres, was acquired in 2007, just as an economic recession was setting in. "During the recession, we tried to figure out what we could learn from this watershed community, what would be the ideal type of housing," he said.


What developers learned was larger homes were not necessarily better.

The homes, priced at an average 60 percent of the price for a Squam-area waterfront home, offers value as well. Home models vary in size and price in Phase I from $225 to $325 per square foot, depending upon size, quality, scope and complexity. The Discovery Home, a completed model with 2,400 square feet, starts at $547,200. The development will have a community trail system and a limited homeowners association with on-site property management.Squam River Landing's ribbon cutting is June 27, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Riveredge Marina, 283 River St., Ashland.
