Goffstown Grizzlies fall short in NHIAA Div. II baseball championship

MANCHESTER - Maybe it was nerves. Maybe it was the awe of playing in a professional ballpark. Whatever it was, it took the Grizzlies half an inning to right themselves.

But that lapse was enough to put Goffstown behind for good as they lost to Portsmouth, 5-2, in the NHIAA Division II baseball finals.

The Clippers scored three runs on two hits and two errors in the top half of the first inning, which turned out to be the winning margin.

Afterwards, Goffstown pitcher Tyler Barss was able to put a cap on the Portsmouth batters for most of the game.

Unfortunately, Clippers pitcher Rick Holt was masterful as well, limiting the powerful Goffstown offense to just four singles.

Goffstown did manage to score two runs, both unearned, in the bottom of the third inning. But that was as close as they got.

The Clippers added two more runs in the top of the fifth and rode that three-run margin to victory.
Several hundred Goffstown supporters came to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium to see the Grizzlies lose their second game of the season. They finish 20-2.

Goffstown coach Adam Lawrence thought playing in the Fishercats stadium might have distracted his players at the start.

“Could be nerves,” said Lawrence. “The bigger diamond, the crowd, a big game.”

Lawrence said Portsmouth experienced that before.

Lawrence also thanked the players for their effort and the Goffstown community for its support of his team, and expressed optimism for next year.

“We’re losing seven seniors,” said Lawrence. “But these guys show up and they compete. They just get better every year.”
