Portsmouth's Strawbery Banke marks NH's 225th birthday

PORTSMOUTH — Admission to Strawbery Banke is free to New Hampshire residents June 15-23 as the open air museum celebrates the state's 225th birthday.

June 21, 2013 also marks the 225th birthday of the United States Constitution.

It was New Hampshire's vote to ratify the Constitution, the ninth of a "super majority" of the 13 colonies, that created the United States, hence the matching birthdays.

Strawbery Banke Museum created New Hampshire Week as a thank you gift to all New Hampshire residents.

Admission is free to state residents with proof of residency during the museum's normal operating hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., from Saturday, June 15 through Sunday, June 23. In addition to tours of the 10-acre property with 25 historic buildings and eight gardens, visitors can enjoy two special exhibits for 2013, "Tapping Portsmouth: How the Brewing Industry Shaped the City" and "First Nations Diplomacy: The 300th Anniversary of the 1713 Treaty of Portsmouth," which was reached between the English colonials and the Native Americans of coastal Maine and New Hampshire.

On Friday, June 21, the museum will welcome Gov. Maggie Hassan and other state and local dignitaries for a birthday party with a cake in the shape of New Hampshire created by Wild Orchid Baking Company of Hampton.

"Strawbery Banke Museum is the perfect place to celebrate New Hampshire's 225th birthday because we share the history of the state and the nation, as it occurred in the same waterfront Portsmouth neighborhood for the past three centuries," said Lawrence J. Yerdon, president and CEO of Strawbery Banke Museum. "Just as New Hampshire is the state that made the nation by voting to ratify the U.S. Constitution, Portsmouth is where New Hampshire began in 1623 with an English settlement named 'Strawberry Banke.'"
