Truck ends up perched above tollbooth in Hampton crash

HAMPTON – A pickup truck ended up lodged between a tractor-trailer truck and a concrete barricade in a crash Wednesday morning at the Interstate 95 toll plaza.

The odd accident happened about 8:45 a.m. on the south side of the highway.

Christopher Desjardins, 43, of Wells, Maine, was driving a 2011 Ford Ranger south on I-95, approaching the toll plaza when he struck the concrete island and protective barrier separating lanes 1 and 2, according to state police. The truck traveled over the top of the barricade and then hit the steel roof supports.

In the meantime, Mark McDonald, 39, of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., driving a tractor-trailer truck, had just stopped at lane 1 and was about to pay the toll when the Ford Ranger began to lean to the right and became lodged against the left side of the trailer attached to McDonald's International truck.

Hampton Fire/Rescue members had to stabilize the Ford Ranger before they could safely remove Desjardins and then take him to Portsmouth Regional Hospital. He was treated for minor injuries and released. McDonald was not injured.

The attendant in the toll booth that was hit was not injured.

The right two lanes of I-95 south were closed for about two hours as troopers investigated the crash and the vehicles were removed. Police said additional closures may be needed while the damage is assessed and repairs made.

Assisting state police at the scene were members of Hampton Fire/Rescue, the state police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit and the state DOT.

The collision remains under investigation by trooper Michael A. Shupe.
