Newmarket company wins first Rochester startup competition

ROCHESTER — Kinetic Surface Control, a Newmarket company that develops technology to strip paint and corrosion from metal, concrete, asphalt and other surfaces, won a $20,000 prize package Thursday in the inaugural Startup Rochester competition.

The event, which featured seven finalists presenting their business plans to investors, professionals and entrepreneurs, was sponsored by the Manchester-based abi Innovation Hub and the Rochester Economic Development office.

“The abi Innovation Hub is committed to bringing the Live Free and Start movement across our great state and Startup Rochester was a tipping point for entrepreneurship here in New Hampshire,” said Jamie Coughlin, CEO and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the abi Innovation Hub, in a news release. “This competition was about identifying and funding exciting new technology startups, and we delivered.”

Kinetic Surface Control is developing its DropBlast, a 100-percent water-based technology to strip paint, corrosion or other surface treatment from metal, concrete or asphalt surfaces and prepare these surfaces for repainting, re-coating or re-surfacing. A prototype, which the company is building with the University of New Hampshire, will be demonstrated for the Navy this summer.

“We are honored to have won the first ever Startup Rochester competition,” said Steve Graves, president and CEO of Kinetic Surface Control. “This was a great opportunity, and it identified a wide range of innovative products and services.”

Startups interested in taking part in Startup Rochester were asked to submit a short application, of which only seven finalists were invited to participate for the $20,000 prize package that included $10,000 cash and $10,000 in in-kind professional services.

The other finalists were FreshAir, Techlok, New England UAV, Simple Charters, Ustabilize and Wise Technology.
