PLAISTOW — Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case of a Timberlane Regional Middle School student who was reported missing Friday and found in Dover Saturday night.
Plaistow Deputy Police Chief Kathleen Jones said Plaistow and Dover police are investigating the incident, but referred questions to the Dover Police Department as the "bulk" of the investigation will be done by that agency.
Police issued a plea for the public's help Saturday afternoon after 13-year-old Sophie Cesati failed to return home from school on Friday. The Plaistow girl was reported as a runaway juvenile, but police considered her missing and feared she may end up in a potentially dangerous situation.
Sophie's parents were also worried about her safety and created a Facebook page called "Find Sophie Cesati" to spread the word about her disappearance.
When a search was launched, Plaistow Police Lt. William Baldwin said Saturday that he believed her disappearance may have resulted from online conversations she had through social media websites, Baldwin said.
Baldwin also said he believed she was with another person, possibly someone she met online. However, neither Dover nor Plaistow police will say whether she was found with another individual Saturday night.
"Dover was involved in locating her and the Dover Police Department is looking into what brought her to Dover and why," said Dover Police Lt. Brant Dolleman.
Dolleman would not discuss the specifics of the case because it involves a juvenile and is still under investigation. However, he said that, in general, when a person is missing "it's incumbent on any police department to try to find out where the person went and why they went there and if anything bad happened while they were away from their family."
He added, "When you're talking about somebody that young, that's why there would be a police investigation."firstname.lastname@example.org
