Police: Speeding, reckless driving blamed for fatal I-93 crash in Salem

SALEM — State police said excessive speed and reckless driving were the likely cause of the crash on Interstate 93 that left a Massachusetts man dead Monday evening.

Emergency crews were summoned to the scene, near Exit 1 on Interstate 93 south around 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Initial investigations by the N.H. State Police Technical Accident Reconstruction Unit revealed that a white Ford F150 pickup truck was observed to be speeding and rapidly changing lanes while traveling south Monday evening, before crashing into a 2009 Infinity, causing the other driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Trooper Sean Harrington of State Police Troop B said Cornelius V. Stanley, 34, of Lawrence, Mass., was ejected on impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene after his truck struck a guardrail in the highway median and rolled over several times.

Police said the Infinity's driver and a passenger weren't injured in the crash. The car sustained minor damage.

Salem police and fire crews, along with Massachusetts State Police and the state Department of Transportation assisted at the scene, shutting down two of the highway's southbound travel lanes for a couple of hours following the crash.

Just a quarter of a mile from the Massachusetts state line, that section of highway is undergoing construction and has been the site of various crashes in conjunction with recent traffic flow changes.

The accident remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is encouraged to contact Trooper Sean Harrington at the N.H. State Police — Troop B barracks at 666-3333.
