Lee Nyquist: Jeanne Shaheen is a great workhorse for New Hampshire
U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is one of New Hampshire’s finest public servants of our lifetimes. It is not surprising that she is the only woman in American history to serve as both her state’s governor and U.S. senator. Moderate, not ideological, Jeanne truly reflects New Hampshire values and has for over a generation of dedicated public service.
Right-wing political operatives are already hard at work to rewrite our state’s political history in advance of the November 2014 election when Sen. Shaheen will be on the ballot as a candidate for re-election. Mike Biundo’s Union Leader column on June 6 is an unfortunate example. It is wrong on the facts and wrong in its analysis of what today’s New Hampshire values are.
Our senior senator is a senator’s senator. Bipartisan respect for her among her colleagues is nearly universal. Jeanne is always working, never showboating. She rejects ideology and instead engages in an independent and inquisitive approach on each issue that comes before her to determine the right solutions for New Hampshire. She always emphasizes her constituents’ beliefs and needs and rejects narrow, extremist, uncompromising dogma and jargon.
She always elevates the public interest over the pleadings of special interest groups. She is truly an ombudsman for the people. Her quiet, persuasive, yet unwaveringly strong and persistent leadership wins victory after victory for our state’s voters in Washington.
Sen. Shaheen has always been a strong believer in the partnership between business and government to move our economy forward. As a former three-term governor, multi-term state senator, and small business person, the senator has worked to keep the New Hampshire economy competitive in the global marketplace. She has advocated for strategic investments in education for our children and grandchildren. Holding consumer assistance forums for seniors, small business resources fairs and town halls throughout the state, Jeanne is always in New Hampshire for her constituents and family. She has personally met and spoken with thousands of constituents and will continue to do so.
New Hampshire voters know Jeanne Shaheen. They like what they see. They will not be fooled. The people know and trust Jeanne Shaheen for a lifetime of service and a lifetime as a loving, caring and nurturing wife, mother and grandmother. They know that her accessibility and constituent service rivals that of any of country’s political leader. New Hampshire business people know that if they need action by the government to help get things off the dime, Sen. Shaheen is the go-to person. No amount of historical revisionism will fool New Hampshire voters because they know Jeanne Shaheen.
It is not surprising that Sen. Shaheen has significant double-digit leads in the polls over any potential comers who would challenge her re-election. She has earned them the old-fashioned way — hard work and a truly personal relationship with and connection to the voters of New Hampshire. She is one of a kind. The people know it and there’s not enough political spin in the world to change that.
