Heavy rain could bring flooding in areas of NH

Most of New Hampshire will be under a flood watch today, with rain falling as heavily as a inch an hour in some southern New Hampshire locations and other areas of the state receiving nearly 3 inches of rain, the National Weather Service said.

Only Coos County is not part of the flood watch.

The Weather Service said heavy rainwas expected to fall late Monday in southern New Hampshire, including the cities of Manchester, Nashua and Keene.

Urban areas are susceptible to the flooding, the Weather Service said, and people should take steps to protect any items that could be damaged by floodwaters. People who live in flood prone areas should have a safe place to go if needed.
Motorists should plan on alternative routes because road closures are possible, the Weather Service said.

"Due to recent heavy rainfall, the ground is already saturated, so any additional rainfall will quickly run off into streams and rivers," the Weather Service said.
"Streams and rivers will rise quickly (Monday) night through Tuesday night with the potential for flooding," the Weather Service said.

Rainfall of an inch an hour is possible in southern New Hampshire, especially if accompanied by thunderstorms, the Weather Service said. The rainfall average will be 1 to 2.5 inches through Tuesday evening.
In central and coastal New Hampshire, the flood watch starts later — at 2 a.m. Tuesday and lasts until Wednesday evening. Localized rainfall could reach up to 3 inches.
