ConVal girls win Division II title

HOOKSETT - ConVal made the first time the charm.

Junior Courtney Fisher handled the pitching and senior shortstop Lauren Mackey led the offense as the Cougars of Peterborough won their first state softball championship in their first title game appearance.

No. 2-seeded ConVal survived a last-inning score to knock off No. 1 Coe-Brown of Northwood, 5-3, for the Division II championship at Southern New Hampshire University.

ConVal finished at 17-3. Coe-Brown was also 17-3.

Coe-Brown won the Class I championship in 2010 with a 5-3 win over Kennett of Conway in the finale. The Braves had been finalists in both 2008 and 2009.

The Bears entered the top of the seventh down 5-0 and made things interesting. The game ended with Fisher collecting her 10th strikeout of the night.

Lauren Jones led off with a single and Cailtin Foley made it runners on second and third when she reached on an outfield error.

Amanda Riley singled to right to score a pair and it was 5-2 with no outs. Fisher induced a liner to left and a comebacker to the mound for two outs.

Holly Donohue knocked in the third run with a single to left.

Fisher got her final strikeout and a celebration in the pitcher's circle ensued.

The Cougars scored three runs in the first and added a pair in the second and put Coe-Brown into a huge hole.

The first two ConVal runners in the top of the first reached on a hit batsman followed by a base on balls. Mackey drove in one run with a double and Fisher and Bryanna Lindsay each had run-scoring singles.

Mackey's bloop single that barely reached the outfield knocked in two more runs in the second inning.

The Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the first, but Fisher struck out the next two batters and got a line out to shortstop.

In the fifth, Coe-Brown had the bases loaded with two outs and Fisher got Kianna Daudelin on a fly ball to right field to end the inning.

Coe-Brown's Shannon Burke and Donohue singled to lead off the sixth.

Con-Val catcher Marena Brock chased down an attempted bunt that was popped foul and Fisher then got a strikeout and a ground out.
