Bedford boys cruise to Div. II lacrosse title

EXETER — Tuesday night’s Division II boys’ lacrosse championship game was void of suspense.

Top-seeded Bedford scored the game’s first seven goals and breezed to a 16-2 victory over sixth-seeded Goffstown at Exeter High’s Eustis Field.

It was the second Division II championship in as many years for the Bulldogs, who extended the program’s winning streak to 40 games. Bedford led 4-0 after one quarter, 10-1 at halftime and 15-2 entering the fourth. Running time kicked in after Bedford’s Tyler Sullivan made it a 13-1 game with 6:45 to play in the third.
“I asked the guys for 48 minutes of solid lacrosse and I’m very happy with the outcome because I think we got 48 straight minutes,” Bedford coach Matthew Guerard said. “I can’t really put into words how hard these kids have worked over the last couple years to get to this point.”
Jason Campbell and Dan Colella each scored five goals to lead the Bedford offense. David Phelps added four. Colella completed the season with a team-high 64 goals. Phelps finished with 48 and Campbell had 45.
Jacob Ollila and Logan Allard scored Goffstown’s goals.

“We needed to shut off some of their big scorers and then possess the ball, but it didn’t quite play out the way we wanted it to,” Goffstown coach Joshua Lewis said. “Our second plan was to attack the cage, but their goalie (Mathew Howe) played fantastic.”
Bedford completed its season with a 21-0 record and outscored its opponents 314-96 this season. The Bulldogs finished 19-0 last season, when they beat St. Thomas Aquinas of Dover in the title game.

Guerard said he would like to see his program move to Division I.
“We would like to, but right now that’s not in our control,” he said. “I would definitely like to, though.”

Goffstown finished 11-6. It was Goffstown program’s first appearance in a championship game.

“Bedford is a strong team, they’re a tough team,” Lewis said. “Would I have liked it to be closer? Absolutely, but Bedford doesn’t have two, three or four phenomenal players, they have a team of above-average players.”
It was the third meeting between the teams this season. Bedford won the first two 21-10 and 15-5.

“I’m not ashamed of these boys or sad for them because they did me proud,” Lewis said. “They fought and did Goffstown proud. They did the program proud. People are going to start to talk about Goffstown lacrosse.”
