Two teachers quit, third on leave amid police probe at Exeter High

EXETER – Two teachers from Exeter High School have resigned while a third remains on paid leave stemming from an investigation that began in April when a female student alleged she had been sexually assaulted.

Superintendent Michael Morgan said Wednesday that as a result of the initial investigation, one teacher resigned May 24, a second resigned Wednesday, and a third is on paid administrative leave "pending another investigation." No charges have been brought yet against any of the teachers.

Police Chief Richard Kane confirmed that all three teachers are part of an "active criminal investigation" being conducted at the high school.

"They've been put on paid administrative leave by the school based on the school's investigation. We would certainly like to talk to them about our current criminal investigation into the alleged sexual assault at the high school," Kane said.

Neither police nor the superintendent has released the names of the teachers.

"Because this remains a confidential personnel matter, I am not able to release any additional information," Morgan said.

He declined to give reasons for the investigation or their resignations.

"The police have been notified and are doing their own investigation," Morgan said.

The initial investigation was launched after a student reported that she had been sexually assaulted in 2009, police said.

The teacher involved in the initial investigation was placed on leave April 18 while the school conducted its own investigation and has since resigned.

Kane said police also want to talk to the two other teachers who have since been placed on leave, one of whom resigned Wednesday, as they investigate their "knowledge in regards to the sexual assault case."

"They both have attorneys and this point are not talking to the police," Kane said.
