Rescue crews treat more than 100 at Tough Mudder event in Gilford Saturday

GILFORD — Rescue crews treated more than 100 patients at the Tough Mudder event at Gunstock Mountain Resort over the weekend, mostly for heat-related illnesses and injuries, according to the fire chief.

Tough Mudder officials said more than 16,000 athletes from around the country and the world came to the event, which features 21 obstacle events along the resort’s trails and paths.

Temperatures on Sunday were in the 90s, and humidity was high, but most entrants finished the events, which are designed to test strength, stamina, and “mental grit,” according to Tough Mudder officials.

Most participants took several hours to finish the event, which is meant to be a personal test, not a timed competition.

“There was nothing serious (in terms of injuries) that we know of outside of dislocations, probably some fractures. It was mostly heat-related illness,” said Fire Chief Stephen Carrier.

Rescue crews treated a total of 80 patients on Saturday, Carrier said. Of those, 18 needed to be taken to the hospital.

On Sunday, 30 event participants needed treatment, and eight were taken to the hospital, Carrier said.

Ambulances and rescue crews from Gilford, Laconia, Tilton-Northfield, and Belmont helped during the event, as did Gunstock Safety Services personnel, he said.

Tough Mudder events, now held worldwide, support the Wounded Warrior Project, which supports the needs of severely injured service men and women. Participants are asked to raise funds for the company by emailing an online fundraising link to friends and family.
